Jimma Aayyoo Ambulance

6238 Jimma Aayyoo ambulance is non-profit public ambulance agency established in 2020 in Jimma City southwest Ethiopia.

Aayyoo Ambulance is medicalized hospital-based Emergency Medical Service (EMS) of it's kind established on hybrid EMS modelfor low resource setup, and by applying Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system in Ethiopia.

Ayyoo ambulance established by joint collaboration program between Jimma University Medical Center Jimma City Health Office and Ethiopian Ministry of Health. Major Cities Emergency and Critical Care Improvement Program (ME-CIP) is a collaborative program aimed to ensure delivery of timely care and build resilience in the health system, realize collaborative learning and citywide coordination and facilitate pre-hospital services and referral systems in five major Ethiopian cities and University hospitals, among which Jimma city is one of them[1]. Aayyoo ambulance formally started its public service on 4th October 2020.


Headquarter of Aayyoo ambulance is based within Jimma Medical Center, Jimma University Main Campus Main Campus, located in Jimma city. Aayyoo ambulance currently own 14 Ambulance units including Advanced ambulance and standard mobile clinic. Aayyoo ambulance dispatch center offers 24hours/7days services, operating on four digits toll-free EMS number is 6238, to receive and respond to public emergency call.

A dispatch facility used by Aayyoo Ambulance use CAD technology that connected to GPS-based automatic vehicle location (AVL) and geographic information (GIS) system, which enables dispatchers to monitor vehicle locations provided by an AVL system. In addition, CAD features such as automatic number identification and caller-identification system and a two-way radio communication system consoles are being added to Aayyoo ambulance dispatch system under digitalization project led by Jimma University ICT sercivice. Currently a mannual incident location system aided with GPS-based AVL used to enhance the service by pinpointing the locations of both the client and the most suitable vehicle for serving the client.

A toll-free public EMS number of Aayyoo Ambulance is 6238. Through this anyone in the catchment community can call request for ambulance during emergencies, where as MDT system that used SMS is being integrated to the service activation mode.
